|How to Lock Through|
Lock C1 and its associated dam on the modern Champlain Canal is located in the village of Waterford, five miles north of the Troy Federal Lock when heading up the Hudson River, and 3 miles north of Lock E2 and the beginning of the Erie Canal. This lock is a small to medium sized, lifting and lowering boats approximately 14.3 feet (15.2 to 29.5 feet above sea level). The lock master can be reached by VHF channel 13 or by phone at (518) 237-8566.
Located at the upstream end of the lock is a free paved boat launch and floating dock which is available for launching and staying overnight. There are also a few picnic tables about which make this a nice stop for lunch and/or fishing. There is little to do nearby this lock; there are no nearby stores or parks. For these conveniences it is best to stop at another nearby lock or terminal wall.
Directions: Lock 1 is located on the western side of the river and accessible from State Route 4. When coming from the south, entry is via a small road (right turn) approximately 2.5 miles north of downtown Waterford. When coming from the north, the side road is approximately 0.4 miles south of the Lock 1 Marina (private) on your left. From either direction, look for the NYS Canal Corporation signs.
