How to Lock Through

Lock C2 on the modern Champlain Canal is located just south of Mechanicville and 4 miles north of Lock C1. This lock is one of the more impressive examples of taming the Hudson River, especially with it being located on an island in the middle of the river. On the east side of the island is a dam and spillway for excess water; on the west side of the lock is a hydroelectric power plant. This combination of lock, spillway and power plant, and the 18.5 lift (or drop) make for an interesting boating experience and can really show the power of the river.

Even more interesting is that the original hydro-electric power generators from nearly 100 years ago are still generating electricity. When the canal was built, there was no power lines to this area, so nearly every lock had is town power generating turbines. This lock still makes use of them!

This is another lock that is not particularly a good candidate for stopping at. Besides the structures themselves there is not much of interest here and there is no good spot to tie up to. For access to Mechanicville, the free terminal wall is a better choice. For finding seclusion, other nearby locks are probably better candidates. The lower elevation is 29.5 feet above sea level and the upper elevation is 48 feet above sea level. The lock master can be reached by VHF channel 13 or phone at (518) 644-4961. Lock C3 is three miles upstream.

Directions: The lock and island can be reached by its own private bridge. Access is reached from State Route 4. From the north: When heading south out of Mechanicville the lock will be visible on your left and shortly after will be signs pointing for the access road. Similarly from the south, there are signs pointing to the access road (on your right) just before entering the city of Mechanicville.
