How to Lock Through

Lock C3 on the Champlain Canal is located in the town of Mechanicville, just north of the heart of the city and terminal wall. It is 2.5 miles north of Lock C2. This lock lifts and lowers boat 19.5 feet (from 48 to 67.5 feet above sea level). There is little to do at this lock, and there are no great tie up points. For access to stores and the like, use the Mechanicville Terminal Wall, for seclusion, use Lock C4.

Lock 3 controls the level of the water pool between Lock 3 and 4. Vessels requiring more than 15 feet of bridge clearance should contact the lock master well in advanced to ensure the pool can be dropped enough to fit under the railroad bridge. The lock master can be reached at (518) 664-5171 or on VHF channel 13. Lock C4 is barely visible under the railroad bridge to the north at 1.83 miles away.

Directions: Those traveling from the west side of the Hudson River should take the route 67 bridge across to the east side of the river; the bridge is located in the heart of Mechanicville. From the bridge it is approximately .3 miles to North Linden Ave (on your left). Visitors traveling from the east should come in on route 67 and just before reaching the bridge, there will be a gold course on your right, immediately following the gold course is North Linden Ave. From both directions: Take North Linden Ave for 0.5 miles (road turns into Knickerbocker Road, no turning necessary). The lock is on your left and is clearly marked with signs.
